INTRO

“Lovesickness expressed on the strings of the Pipa.” “Four strings are like a thousand words, one piece reveals ten thousand emotions”. These are just some of the poetic musings from our ancient poets about the Pipa. Pipa music is so incredibly poetic! One can only be humbled when faced with such tradition; I never feel far from the ancient Pipa works. Another old poet once said “Man meets the moon for the first time, but when did the moon first meet man?” I have learned that in life, one must respect both the ancient and the contemporary. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to my two incredible teachers, first my beloved mentor, the great Mr. Shi-Chen Lin(deceased Pudong School of Pipa Master / The Pudong branch of Pipa which stands as part of China’s National Historical and Intangible Culture Heritage) who taught me his music and the unique Pudong playing style, striking a unique balance between elegance and strength. And second, Professor Ku-fang Lin who taught me the importance of embracing tradition, while never getting lost in the contemporary world.
